THE EYELIDS & OCULAR SURFACE CONDITIONS

Posterior blepharitis (meibomian gland dysfunction) is a chronic, often undiagnosed inflammation of the eyelids, resulting in dry eyes and allergic symptoms in the eyes, due to a reduced quantity and quality of lipid oil in the tears, usually caused by dysfunction of the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. Artificial tears contribute to relief but are only a symptomatic and supplementary treatment.

Meibomian glands of the eyelids

The meibomian or lipid glands present in the upper and lower eyelids are responsible for the production of the lipid layer, a fundamental component of tears, which helps to slow down their evaporation.

SYMPTOMS OF POSTERIOR BLEPHARITIS (MEIBOMIAN GLAND DYSFUNCTION)

Meibomian gland dysfunction due to eyelid inflammation often leads to chronic dry eye and recurrent styes with symptoms such as:

Irritated, swollen eyelids

Red, irritated eyes

Foreign body sensation/gritty feeling in eyes

Burning, itching, stinging

Epiphora

Sensitivity to light

Blurred vision

Makeup intolerance

Contact lens intolerance

Difficulty driving

Optical fluctuations during the day

Common causes contributing to meibomian gland blockage/dysfunction:

Chronic undiagnosed eyelid inflammation

Incomplete eyelid and eyelash hygiene

uncontrolled bacterial growth

Demodex mites

Dermatitis

glaucoma treatments

makeup

contact lenses
